Great wine and wood-fired pizza!
Visit website →Got an extra day in the Hill Country? Point the car northwest. You're already in the second most-visited wine region in the country — only Napa draws more. The 290 wine road runs from Johnson City to Fredericksburg — tasting rooms, lavender fields, and hilltop patios one after another — and it ends at a German Main Street in Fredericksburg that's worth the trip on its own. About 90 minutes from the chapel, and worth every minute.
Drive out on US-290 starting in Johnson City through Hye and Stonewall, stopping at two or three wineries along the way — that's the sweet spot; more and the day blurs. Land in Fredericksburg for a late lunch and a slow walk down Main Street, then either browse until dinner or finish with a golden-hour hike up Enchanted Rock before heading home.
Early risers: flip it. Sunrise at Enchanted Rock first, then work your way back east through the tasting rooms as they open.
Approximate, without traffic. Designate a driver — the pours are real.
Our picks along the way — wineries first, then the town itself. Most tasting rooms welcome walk-ins for small groups; reserve ahead for six or more. The following are a few recommendations, but there are many more places along the way.
